Philosophy It seems to me that many things in our world get back to elemental shapes and forms. The stars and planets, drops of water or oil, and soap bubbles naturally become spheres. Give anyone a ball of some sort and they will usually begin to play with it in some fashion. I work with spheres, orbs or balls however you wish to term them that are made out of clay. I hope they have an attraction for people that makes one want to pick them up. Most of these balls also contain beads that rattle when you handle them. The sound becomes part of the enjoyment and the esthetic of the rattles. On each rattle I explore different patterns by carving into the surface and impressing lines and texures. I approach each piece as a separate sculpture that has its own character. I refrain from thinking of them as decorative balls or ornaments. I attempt to make each rattle different from all those that I have made before and consider each to be a work of art. They also look attractive when displayed in groups.

The Work All the rattles are made by hand by forming two pinch pots that are joined to become a ball. Most of the irregularities are smoothed with my thumb. Then the design is marked on the surface and carved into the clay. Sometimes patterns are repeated as a variation on a theme. Sometimes two or more designs are combined on one sphere. These I think of as fusion pieces. The glazes are also mixed in ways that I do not often repeat. All the clays and glazes at this time are low fire.
